Moths are evil
Not too much to say about today, really chill relaxing - this is the island portion of the trip. We have been hopping from cove to cove ‘opening the swimming pool’ and just enjoying the sun and the sea. No run ins with the police, no crazy moments, just peaceful sunbathing. A few fish I guess? Not many of those really though either.
We have also been getting later and later starts to the day which has been nice. Usually sailing in the morning - swimming early afternoon and arriving in our destination late afternoon, even dinner time. Which was how today rolled out.
After the morning swim I was so exhausted I actually passed out in this amazing little recliner of sorts that I rigged up. Basically balancing on the back of the seats with the biggest buoy propped behind me as my lounge chair. You may think ‘there’s no way that can be comfortable’ but in fact, so comfy, that it was nap worthy - or at least that is just how exhausted I was. I woke up and decided to actually go into my cabin and take a proper nap. I knew I might miss a few sites but I needed the sleep (I’ve been working so hard and all)
I awoke to find we entered a small inlet of sorts surrounded by what I’ll describe as dreamy island magic. The most beautiful stop yet I would say. Called Begulje.
We made a joke with Jose the first night saying that he needs to be careful feeding us the most amazing pizza along with that sunset - setting the standard pretty high on the first night. We would expect that as a minimum now being the first night and all. We continue to joke about it, but in all honesty it has literally gotten better and better each day. The food, the experience, the locations...
These little island stops require us to deploy some sailing skills as well. You basically need to somehow from the front of the boat have one person hook into a random buoy in the water (all of which require different ways of attaching I
learned) and a second person would then typically be with the rope attempting to thread it through the buoy ring. Or, there would be a rope from the random buoy which we would need to attach to the boat. This was always a spectacle since Jose had to be at the wheel and couldn’t help us, we were left on our own and there was never a dull moment during these events. We would miss hooking it; we would hook in but the buoy was too heavy to pull up and we would lose it; we couldn’t reach down far enough; every time we failed Jose had to steer a uturn and have us try again. It seemed like finally, however we figured it out, it was always a small celebration and our reward - Jose would open the pool!
You may be thinking, that’s not very exciting Meagan why celebrate. What you may not interpret through these words yet although I’ve mentioned it, is how damn hot it is! I know I know, cry me a river right, poor me out here in the sunshine all day - all I’m saying is that taking more than one try to get that damn buoy... not ideal. Getting it on the first try and getting the pool opened sooner - boom sailing hero.
Into the water, and what a view. I relate this to camping a little but in water ita so much more majestic. Think of driving your RV around looking for a spot to set up for the night and then you finally find one, it’s August so the park is usually full. You look to your right - campers - left - campers. Here, you look out and the campers are a fleet of sailing boats. Sometimes the neighbors park a little too close (remember Dario? The boats there were maybe only 15 feet apart - not the best park to stop the trailer) but here there was ample space - a luxury park. The pictures maybe can explain more. Maybe I’m just getting heat stroke... I’m lost in the Adriatic dream.
After our well earned swim, as you now know why, got ready for dinner and made our way on the dingy to the shore (less than 2 mins away) where the restaurant was, literally. You could almost be served on the dingy it was so close to the water.
Yup, you know I’m gonna say it, the food was amazing! FINALLY lamb was on the menu and it was the chefs recommendation... need I say more? Three of us ordered the lamb and what I liked about that is when you multi order a dish they prepare it ‘family style’ meaning you get a large platter and simply dish up. It was... twist! Not as good as my mom makes. It was really lovely though and had amazing flavour. If you’ve tried my lamb - or my moms, you lucky dog - you understand. We just know lamb.
Another one bites the dust. Dinners have been later each day so not too much happening afterward. Little wine on the boat and another humid cabin to try falling asleep in.
Omg I forgot to mention the moth... obviously I’m writing this so all is well, I’m still alive. Moths here were so big I thought it at first was a humming bird. Blehhhhhh I was minding my own business, tanning on the front of the boat, and there it was, on the mast of the boat just watching me... haunting. Why is there a moth out in the middle of the day you ask? This I no longer question, they haunt me. It could be the middle of winter in the middle of the day, and a moth would be flittering towards me. Did I ever tell you the story of how I didn’t go back to my apartment for two days because a moth was in it and I couldn’t find it...
Did I mention the full moon... how could this trip be less magical. Still wish I could take better photos of the moon - that will be my next adventure.
OMG did I mention you can buy croissants filled with jam!? Life changing... I also hear there are chocolate filled ones... ya I know Jeremy, I know.
LAMB! Fries are common additions to plates sometimes - who doesn’t like a French fry!? There were also some beautifully grilled vegetables ... heavenly.
Our ‘camp ground’ for the night
That full moon again... Amore mio
The sailing crew - dubbed ‘Jose and the pussycats’
Sunset swim? I’ll take two.
How I attempt to capture the moon
